A Story Cast in Bronze

Chris Crum’s journey to sculpture is rooted in a lifelong love of art and a profound turning point later in life.

As a child, he imagined becoming an artist, but his path initially led elsewhere—through the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering, followed by military service and a successful career in the medical device industry.
In 2015, a life-altering event changed everything. Searching for a way to cope with deep personal pain, Chris was encouraged by a friend to put his hands on clay. That simple act became both grounding and transformative. From that time of grief emerged his first sculpture, In The Quiet After, a moving work depicting a kneeling angel holding a dying dove.

That moment marked the rediscovery of the artist he once dreamed of becoming.

Chris now creates all of his work in bronze, collaborating with Firebird Bronze Foundry in Troutdale, Oregon. He was mentored by renowned sculptor Rip Caswell, whose guidance helped shape both his technical approach and artistic voice. Based in the Vancouver, Washington–Portland, Oregon area, Chris’s pieces are created using the lost wax method and reflect a deep respect for craftsmanship, patience, and enduring materials.

Over time, his subject matter has evolved to embrace the passions that bring him joy—particularly great food, fine wine, and the rituals of sharing them. His most recent bronze sculptures explore wine as both subject and symbol, drawing parallels between bronze and wine: both shaped by time, care, and restraint, both revealing their character slowly.

Through bronze, Chris seeks to capture the stories and rituals that give life meaning.

When not in the studio, Chris can often be found cooking gourmet meals for his wife and opening a special bottle to share with friends—moments of connection that continue to inspire both his life and his art.

“I felt the pain leaving my body through my fingertips as I sculpted the angel.”
